Avadhuta

He wears tiger’s skin on his back.
He drinks from the skull bitter moisture of cold nights and human secretions.

He smudges his body with ashes of burnt corpses. He lives on smashans amongst foul and mourning. He walks naked like a child,
embarrassing the stars.

He is always alone, this mysterious pilgrim,

He roars with laughter sitting next to extinguished fire. On the tops of the mountains he dances his crazy dance, in the woods he sings his plaintive songs.
He mumbles strange tantras, wildly rolling his eyes.

He sits on the bones, hugging his knees,
in his mountain cave.
He eats raw meat, drinking buffalo urine and red wine...

His is not seen by bats, he is loved by children,
the spirits serve him, the animals are not afraid of him, he is honoured by Gods, people are frightened of him, the sages look for him, he is praised by yogis, goddesses love him in their dreams,
the kings bow down to him,
the religious people pray to him...

He has a staff in his hands,
his ears are pierced with ear-rings,
his neck is wreathed with beads,
his body is enlaced with wind,
his heart is powdered with ashes,
his mind is saturated with eternity,
his look is frozen in infinity,
his speech is melodic and strange,
his eyes sparkle like lightning,
his actions are like the ones of the child, spontaneous. His body smells sweet...
He walks on stars,

he feeds on dew and nectar,
he moves stones and clouds,
he flies like wind,
he walks on the threads of time,
he blows into cracks between worlds, creating miracles.

He is honored by gods,

he is called “contemplator of eternity”... Avadhuta...
