Jnyana Yoga

It is the path of exploration. It is not the path of intellect, because jnyana yoga is aimed at overcoming the limitations of the intellect or logical abilities of man, because intellect is a part of the jiva's inner instrument, made up from past experiences and the samskaras storage associated with past incarnations, i.e. it is what brought us to the current state of limitation.

Jnyana Yoga is the path to intuitive knowledge, and it is illogical - that is, it cannot be described using the simple logic of the human world (Aristotelian logic).

A person, being on this path, contemplates about the essence of life and one's authentic nature. Success on this path requires effort, concentration and total absorption in exploration. It is impossible to gain insight and true knowledge of one's nature without this. This knowledge means intuitive knowledge, which is inexpressible in words.

Jnana yoga way is open to everybody, but very few are ready to follow it, because we are obsessed with inner conflicts and unable to relax and discard fixed ideas and formed experiences, and because most people's minds are too focused on external objects and confused.

Therefore, for most people it is better to begin with other paths of yoga which help to purify the mind, to calm it down and make it more unidirectional first. A person should immerse himself completely in research in order to find the answers required.

Christ said, “Empty yourselves and I will fill you”.

Zen master Chao Chu was asked, "What would you say to someone who came to you with nothing?" He replied, "Throw it away."

This is the beginning of jnyana yoga - giving up all concepts.

Having emptied his mind of the rubble of stereotypes, concepts and dogmas, from this starting point of rejection of ideologies, a person on the path of jnyana yoga must begin to ask himself questions. One of the most known questions is, "Who am I?"

This method was suggested by Ramana Maharishi. Ramana Maharshi was following the path of jnana yoga; he did not just repeat this question for five minutes every morning before breakfast. The question permeated his whole being, penetrated the deepest layers of consciousness and filled it. The research must go on continuously, consciously or unconsciously.

The question should sound regardless of what the seeker does, down to the smallest and most routine things. The whole being of the seeker must be at stake in this research, so that Hamlet's famous question from Shakespeare's drama of the same name ("To be or not to be?") pales before this research. Only then self-realization can be attained. This is the path of jnyana yoga.

Jnyana Yoga is a method of intense contemplation that leads to intuitive knowledge.

Guru helps the follower on the path of jnyana yoga, even when the follower does not know that he is on that path. Guru may pose a question or say something that seems completely contradictory to the student. Guru may pose the question directly or indirectly; the student may hear a passing remark, but it leaves a lasting impression. Something in the student is awakened, his mind enters a state of crisis, and the student becomes totally absorbed in trying to find an answer to the question. The deepest forces of his consciousness come into excitement; the mind becomes unidirectional working with maximum efficiency.

Guru is the only one who can decide whether jnana yoga is suitable for the seeker.
